Tribute to Ted Andrews

Our friend and contributor Ted Andrews passed away on October 24, 2009. Ted was kind, funny, generous, and touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with. Our loss is profound and unimaginable. Our readers share their sentiments, thoughts, and stories below.

Ted was a good friend, a good author, and an inspiration. Some people have a natural charisma, and Ted had that, but it was his self-honesty and sincerity that brought him a loyal following. Ted’s success never went to his head. He remained forever true to his inner convictions and was devoted to using the medium of his books and talks to communicate his knowledge and beliefs, and to inspiring millions to follow his path. All his books were, and are, pioneering. Animal-Speak remains a bestseller because it speaks deep truths without cumbersome scholarship. Ted wrote from experience, both actual work with real non-human life and his deep inner perceptions. Ted loved his animal world and his books teach us to become attuned to our own spirit animals. Ted was also an occultist, although he rarely used that word. His writings on Qabalah had the freshness of personal experience and were crafted to bridge from otherworldly mystical to the more friendly and enchanting world of the fairy, the spirit of the forest, and the beauty of the inner child and the outer child’s joy of life and natural ability to cross over to the inner landscape that is as real for a child as hard physical reality is for the adult. And Ted did write books for children as well as for “grown-ups,” some of whom may have re-discovered that inner world of enchantment and the real alternative world of the fairy. Ted isn’t gone—he will live with us for a long time to come. We have all lost a real friend in his passing but his spirit will remain close to us. We express sympathy to his wife and to all who loved him including “creatures large and small” and of this world and another. Blessed be, Ted. Blessed be all your family and many friends. -- Carl Llewellyn Weschcke, Llewellyn Worldwide

I remember my first INATS West show in Denver. I was all starry eyed, getting to meet many of the authors who have influenced my own writing. And there, right along with them all was Ted Andrews. He seemed to be everywhere at the show. I turn around, and there he was, though I was a bit shy to chat with him. I grew up with many of his books. Animal-Speak was like a Bible in my classes. I joked with my friend Lisa that he is magic, and if you said his name three times and turned around, there he would be! We tried it several times and it seemed to work. Poof, there was Ted. He is magic, but really his magic is through his writings, stories, and work with animals. We were finally introduced that afternoon and had a quiet moment in the vendor hall together where he was very kind to me. We chatted about the business of spirituality and the spirituality of business, and while never curbing my enthusiasm, he told me some very real world things I needed to hear and gave me a lot of thoughtful advice. All of that, with a bit of mischievous humor in his eye. He had a great balance between the world of spirit and the world of cold hard facts, and I still follow much of what he said and am eternally grateful to the kindness he showed a new author just starting out. -- Christopher Penczak

Christopher Penczak’s story (above) is totally true. I used to cross my arms and say Ted Andrews, Ted Andrews, Ted Andrews ... and he would show up every time, more times than not, right behind me. And I could never tell an anecdotal story about him, because he would show up right at that minute. It was so funny … and so Ted. -- Lisa Braun Dubbels

I had the honor of knowing Ted for many years. When people would ask me about animals or totems, I would always refer them to Ted's book Animal-Speak. When he and I would be at the same show, people would often mistake me for Ted and would say, "Hi Ted, good to see you!" I would joke with Ted and ask him if people called him Doug. I feel like I have lost a brother. -- Douglas Blue Feather

As I think of Ted, I can only smile. Those of you who know him will remember the wonderful, gentle smile and the light within him that would radiate from his eyes like stars. If you heard him tell a story he could transport you to another time and place as if by magic! I am a spiritual teacher and have for years referred to Animal-Speak as my bible. It taught me to honor earth, nature, and all of its living wonders. Ted did that for me and millions of others. When I look at a butterfly, I understand the message of transformation, and the hawk in the sky bringing blessings and validation. He has made us all more aware of this incredible kingdom in which we live. He will surely be missed, but he has left us a legacy that is timeless with his wonderful work. Mahalo Ted. E a'o kakou na mea huna I ka honua; teach everyone the hidden secrets of the Earth. -- Leilani DiCocco, Sacred Fire, Kailua Kona, Hawaii

Ted was such a bright light and a genuinely kind human being. When he came to our store and offered classes, customers LOVED him. He will be deeply missed and Animal-Speak will remain a classic. Kim Perkins, Elysian Fields

Ted has helped mold what people needed to learn about. The self reflection of the inner wisdom, Ted understood this and gave the knowledge freely. We will miss Ted here in the physical realm and feel confident that he is now helping from the other side. Thank you Ted for all you've given ... oceans of love my brother... travel swiftly and thank you for holding space for us until we get there. Walking in beauty. -- Lozen Brown Bear

Since the beginning days of INATS, Ted Andrews was a wonderful presence. He participated in anything we asked of him. When we started offering “Lunch with an Author” at the show, our vision was to have an author at a table with 8 or 12 retailers relaxing and chatting. We received so many requests from retailers to eat with Ted that we had to move him to a separate room seating over 50 people. This happened many times. There was never an instance when Ted was without a smile and a warm comment. INATS will certainly miss his genuine spirit.
-- Susie Hare, INATS

After speaking with Ted over several years about his appearing at my store, I finally moved and had the space for what I knew would be a great crowd for one of his workshops. When we had all the arrangements made, I asked Ted if there was anything extra or special he was going to need or want. He shot back an email, telling me that he “demanded” a big bowl of M&Ms, but they could only be the blue ones. He did allow me the leeway of peanut or regular M&Ms, but was very strict about them being blue only. When he arrived for the workshop, I had the hugest bags of M&Ms I could find ready for him, the giant bags you can only get at the wholesale clubs. I didn’t separate out the blue ones, but presented him with a bag of each of the regular and peanut types. The following INATS I brought two more bags with me and gave them to him, with much joy and laughter for both of us. We would joke about the M&Ms every time we spoke after that. I’ve heard from so many of my customers after my newsletter the other day when I informed them about Ted’s passing. He touched so many people and made such a difference in their lives. I am writing this with tears in my eyes, yet one more time, for the loss we are all experiencing. Such a wonderful, kind-hearted, generous man. – Sandi Liss, Soul Journey, Butler, N.J.

Ted Andrews was instrumental in opening the door to introducing me to Llewellyn Worldwide. He literally took me by the hand at the International New Age Trade Show to sing my praises to Bill Krause, publisher at Llewellyn. It is because of this introduction and his promise of an endorsement that my first book, Crystal Consciousness, will be published in 2010 with Llewellyn. I am eternally grateful to Ted because he was able to recognize qualities in me and went beyond what others might normally do to help me get my foot into the publishing world. His event at my store, The Crystal Garden, was one of the most memorable events I’ve hosted out of over a thousand plus events offered in the past 21 years. -- Margaret Ann Lembo, Boynton Beach, Fla.

I am completely shocked and deeply saddened, although I know he is with the animals, fairies, and unicorns now. I pray for Ted's peace. It feels like a passing of an era. -- Doreen Virtue, Ph.D.

I was also saddened to learn about the passing of Ted Andrews. His books provided me a great deal of insight into my own experiences with spirit animals. He was one of the few authors whose spiritual understanding about nature also included in-depth scientific knowledge. His gifts helped others! -- Kim Bold

My spiritual journey on this Earth has been impacted tremendously by Ted through many ways and many years. I had a private world of fairies and nature as a child until I met Ted Andrews. He was a trusted teacher and friend, my son (Stewart) and other children hung around his booth at the Universal Lightworkers Expo in Columbus, Ohio. It was as though he were a pied piper. My son is now grown up, but the many gifts and a set of now dog-eared encyclopedias that Ted gave him were studied and so helpful for an intuitive child. I will always treasure our visits, laughter, and Stewie stories … What an important gift he has left the world—his books are a powerfully honest resource for the metaphysical students and teachers. Ted was a wise, magical man with no agenda other than to teach us to explore the magic of nature. I'm certain that the many kingdoms of nature were there to greet Ted at his graduation into the spirit realm. I think that as I write this, I hear laughter and dancing, and my heart is filled with gratitude and love for this special man. I pray that he is having a most wonderful magical journey. -- Angela Studer, Peace of Nature, Richardson, Texas

Oh my … I am truly going to miss this kind, generous, and loving being. Many years ago I had a metaphysical store and, without even flinching, Ted agreed to come to the store and hold a class in fire angels. It was truly one of the brightest spots in my days back then and though I didn't have continuous contact with him, he remembered me each and every time our paths crossed from that moment on. I lost my daughter and my mother in the past eighteen months and I will truly miss them all, though we know they have not really gone anywhere. Based on all who have crossed over this year alone, I bet there is one big celebration going on over the rainbow, huh? May his friends and family find the solace they need and comfort in the knowledge of all the lives Ted touched and changed forever for the better. With true love and condolences, Ann Swenson (formerly Bartelt), Colorado Springs, Colo.

Ted Andrews had a profound impact on my life. In 1993 I bought his book Animal-Speak as I had been doing research into the magical world of animal speaks since arriving in Santa Fe, N.M., in 1976. The work with animal totems was my own form of personal self-awareness teaching, and I had studied with a Pueblo Native American Elder about the energies of their animal totems. I carried Ted’s book in my car just in case I encountered an animal in the wild, and I could look up its meaning immediately. This was and still is my "bible" on Animal Totems. The INATS show in Denver was a gift to me as I was able to meet Ted in person. I had opened a metaphysical book/gift store in Albuquerque in 1999, The Mystic Bear Bookstore, and was attending as a buyer. Ted was giving away his book. I did not take one as I carried my first copy to him and he signed it, then my sister and I had a reading with him that late afternoon. Many years later, I find myself in Bali designing Animal Totem pendants. I designed one just for Ted, a Wolf Shaman pendant, and gifted him with it. It is still in my jewelry line, and I honor him with this pendant. Ted Andrews is a blessing spirit to us all. He continues to be with us as the Eagle and Hawks fly above us, his spirit will continue to soar within our hearts. -- Jean Kathleen Redman, Infinite Quest

I hosted Ted Andrews back in the ‘90s on two occasions. One of my favorite stories is his "invisibility" trick ... I see it not only as a sign of his magickal ability, but feel it an apt analogy for his magickal strength. He never had to bring attention to himself, only the work. We had people travelling over 100 miles to come and hear him speak and had to book a nearby hotel banquet room to accommodate everyone. I was at the registration desk and Ted was standing behind me. Being a psychic and shamanic practitioner, I used Ted's books on totems in my classes. I am also very aware of people's energies. As I busied myself preparing for the rush of registrants to come through the door, I felt a change in Ted's energy. I looked back and saw him lean back against the wall. I had the sense that he was making his energy merge with the wall. I shook my head and thought, "Why should I think that?" and went about my preparations. Then the doors opened and the first registrants arrived. I handled them and they went in to the hall. No one said hello to Ted or even looked at him or acknowledged him in any way! This went on for the entire registration, and we're talking over 100 people, some of whom had seen Ted speak before. I looked back at him once the last registrants were settling in and he just smiled! Ted was a true shaman, and sincere in his work and words. He spoke from deep wisdom, never holding back. He will be missed. -- Sue Yarnes (Satayana), Into The Light/The Reiki Center, Bloomsburg, Pa.

One of the most beautiful attributes of Ted Andrews was his ability to translate the spiritual for the everyday person. His works were meaningful and accessible regardless of one's level of proficiency in metaphysics or the healing arts. That talent enabled him to touch the lives of so very many of our customers in a deep and lasting way. I had the pleasure of meeting Ted at INATS and was impressed that such an icon in our business was so approachable and down to earth. Although Ted has moved on to the next phase in his existence, the paw print he has left in the soil of our souls will remain, forever. -- Laura Rau, On the Wings of Dreams, Shepherdstown, W.V.

Although I only saw Ted from a distance at INATS, I could always feel his smile and presence as if he were speaking directly to me. I felt I "knew" him because this presence was so strong and engulfing me with its warmth and strength. I am sorry that I never had a chance to actually meet him or have a reading by him. I do feel the loss of his passing, however, as if he were a friend because of the warmth and strength that carried over and through everything he has written. I know what I do today about animals from Nature Speak, Animal-Speak, and his pewter tokens done with Deva Designs. I have learned about my own animal, the skunk, from a casual drawing of tokens. Not just once, but three times in a row, I drew this same token. Thinking, "ewww, skunk," I returned it to the dish, but when I drew it for the third time, I decided to pay attention to it. Its words were simple, "Be assertive and establish strong boundaries." I chuckled because the work I was doing in therapy was exactly that, or rather trying to do that. I put that token into my pocket and carry it to this day. It was the first of many times that Ted's words would mirror what I was thinking or doing, using an animal spirit to "speak" to me. I looked eagerly for his columns in New Age Retailer, as I knew the words would be spoken to masses, yet, very likely, "right on" and individualized to me personally. I was not disappointed. I will miss that advice each month, but I will think of Ted whenever I see an animal or bird (just beginning to work with his latest set of oracle cards). Regardless of where it appears, I know that somehow, its meaning will be conveyed if I refer to the words I can still read from Ted Andrews. And I will be grateful and humbled. Peace. – Debbie Hagen, Deborah Ann’s Rainbow, Dennis Port, Mass.

I am shocked and saddened by Ted’s passing. I didn’t know him personally, but when I was a buyer at the Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver, Colo., I certainly sold many, many copies of his books. And in doing so, I was able to see firsthand how his words and ideas were a great gift to many people. Countless people’s lives were changed for the better as a direct result of his wonderful books. It’s wonderful to know that his books will continue to bring help and healing into the world for many years to come. – Joel Fotinos, Tarcher/Penguin

What a great loss to our community and the world. Ted Andrews was an incredible teacher and storyteller. His body of work is testimony to his legacy of light. -- Judith Lukomski, www.crystalfriends.com

Ted was just about the sweetest, gentlest soul ever to walk this planet. -- Be Engler

My personal recollection of Ted Andrews relates to a healing circle I was facilitating 18 years ago in the Dayton area. This was about the time Ted was making a name for himself with his books, and lecturing. I put out the request to see if Ted might speak at our small women's gathering. To my delight, he said yes. He came asking only gas money and donations, which we were happy to provide. Ted spoke of the things he loved. His passion for animals, his commitment to healing, music, teaching, and his love for the Earth and all beings. Ted is a story-weaver ... always finding room for laughter, and that “twinkle in the eye,” reminding us not to take life (or death) too seriously. Perhaps it's our turn to pick up the baton, and move with it … to carry on the “work of the heart” in honor of Ted's life, as we and he move forward in light, and in love. My heart goes out to Ted's family and friends at this time. He will be missed. He will not be forgotten. -- Karen Ludwick

I remember Ted Andrews as a remarkable man. I met him several years ago at PantheaCon in San Jose. He came to my booth and asked if I could create an aromatherapy blend for his horse that would kick at the vet when he came to examine him. The horse was older and experiencing discomfort. I created an aromatherapy blend for inflammation and pain, and the next time I saw Ted at INATS, he said "It must have worked because when the vet lifted the horse's leg, he didn't flinch or kick out.” I was so glad that I could assist Ted; we all know his love for animals. I am saddened at our loss but so fortunate to have been able to meet, know, and share just a little bit of my earth medicine to help the animals he loved and honored. -- Rebbeca Lavadia, Bekah's Naturals Global Herbs &
Essences

This saddens me greatly. My introduction in the New Age lifestyle was through Ted Andrews’ Animal-Speak. My connection to the animal world is stronger than that of my connection to the human world. I looked forward to each and every issue of New Age Retailer to read Ted's newest column. Truly a great man and his passing is a loss to all of us. We should be glad in the fact that Ted will be reunited with his dear beloved animal friends that he shared with us. -- Dianne, Blanche’s Place

I have more autographed Ted Andrews’ books in my personal library than any other author. I had the pleasure of meeting him at INATS several times. Ted taught me at a time when I was just beginning to open those doors of the metaphysical realm. He threw them wide open and with full gusto! Ted showed me that I was not alone in my earthly beliefs. That man and nature were bonded forever. Always have been, still are, and always shall be. That life itself transcended just what we saw. That it was OK to follow our intuition. Ted the man. Ted the teacher. Ted the inspirer. Thank you, Ted. -- Cliff Neukam, A Company of Angels

I met Ted at multiple INATS shows. What a wonderful, generous spirit so full of love and light. I enjoyed his speaking, his storytelling. What a gift he was to our earth, and he will be so missed. -- Patty Kimler, A Company of Angels

It is with a heavy heart that we write this tribute to Ted, who was one of our most beloved colleagues, and who will always hold a most special, kind, and loving place in our hearts. Although we didn't have the opportunity to get to know Ted really well, each year, for many, many years, our paths would always cross at the International New Age Trade Show in Denver. Each of us was usually on our way to a book signing or some other activity, but we'd always make it a point to stop and chat for a few minutes—we had a mutual admiration for each other. We'd usually exchange products—books and CDs as well as emails and phone numbers—promising that this year, we'd take time from our busy schedules and communicate more deeply with each other. Ted's expertise extended into so many different areas, including writing a brilliant book on "Sacred Sound" which we always recommended. And of course his Animal-Speak series has been a gift to so many and has been our animal totem Bible!! We did not know Ted well, but sensed a strong resonance with him—a kinship as well as a kindness and sincerity in him with which we truly felt connected. He was someone we knew we could have long and meaningful conversations with and undoubtedly much fun at the same time. We trust he felt the same. Alas, even with the best of intentions those emails and phone calls between us never happened because of each other's busy schedules. Now Ted is gone and the world is a lesser place. And it makes us regret that we did not take more action towards communicating with him. It makes us realize the frailty of a lifetime and how we must indeed seize the moment. Ted Andrews was a brilliant writer, teacher, scholar, and overall just a truly beautiful human being who graced our world with his love and presence, and who taught us so much. We are blessed to have known such a wonderful person and to have briefly touched his spirit. He will be missed! We love you, Ted!!! – Jonathan Goldman and Andi Goldman

My husband and I are both so saddened by this news. Ted was one of the best teachers that we have ever had, and we have spoken his name countless times as we try to guide people to good teachers. We are Spiritualists, and we are so grateful for all that he has done for Lily Dale. His teachings will continue to live on all over the world. Ted personally gave me a gift—the gift of cloud gazing—that I have never stopped using. He told me to just relax and turn your attention skyward. What do you see? Yesterday when we went to the ocean to make an offering of flowers in Ted’s honor, we looked up at the clouds and we believe he was looking right back at us. -- Carri and Will Donnan, Ancient City Inn

Thirteen years ago, I met Ted at a festival in Florida, and his wonderful spirit of fun and spirituality was contagious. It had rained all weekend and the grounds were a sloppy mess, but the quality of his past life meditation and other workshops were excellent and made a deep impression on me. -- Ann Marie Augustino

I’ve met Ted several times and had a few readings with him, too. He was such a gifted soul, and I continue to appreciate the knowledge he shared. I still use his books to look up information, especially his Animal-Speak work, which was so awesome. I am sure he will be blessed beyond imagination in the afterlife. Loving blessings to him and his family during this transition time. – Roxanne Carol, Celestial Liaisons Unlimited, Denver, Colo.

In 1993, I opened a New Age store (Ancient Ways) in Glenwood Springs, Colo. At that time it was a small shop in a small town. We were trying to show the local people that New Age was OK and nothing "evil." That year, we sponsored a few authors and had book signings, workshops, and readings. Toward the end of the summer, Ted came to visit us for two days. He was so sweet, nice, and very funny. We all had a wonderful time with him. He was a very special person, and I will miss him dearly. Safe journeys and blessed be, Ted! – Charletha and Chris, Akasha’s Treasures

I am sorry for your loss. I can feel his humble, gentle, yet fun loving spirit all around you—it sounds like soft guitar strumming. Sending you angels and light. -- Cindy Goldenberg

What a sad thing and a great loss! Much too young!!! Sending blessings always! – Diana LaDue Hand, Wise Awakening, Bellingham, Wash.

I had met and was greatly inspired by Ted's work. He is missed. -- "Faerie" Elaine Silver

Ted was a kindhearted man who did so much when our shop owner (Vinny at Spellbound in New Jersey) had heart surgery ...Ted offered us comfort and kindness, as well as taking over the role of high priest in one of our annual rituals ... I can't believe Ted is gone .. .he will be in my heart forever ...
Osunfemi (MayaKalia)

I am in shock. Not a day goes by when I don't refer to one of Ted's wonderful books. Animal-Speak is always at my side and available for customers to refer to. Just this morning I was at a supplier’s who had an adorable little statue of a chipmunk. He offered it to me, and I had to look up the meaning in Ted's new pocket guide, which I always have handy. I got back to Ange Neige, my (Snow Angel) Boutique when the phone rings and my husband is telling me a huge raccoon just crossed over into our lawn. I immediately sent him to check out Ted's Animal-Speak. I remember being at my first INATS show in Denver about eight years ago and Ted walked past me. I hurried to see if he was speaking, but I had just missed his talk—at least I was able to be in his space, and I will never forget it. I wish to send my heartfelt condolences to everyone who had the privilege to know him and those who loved him. His sage teachings will live on through many. – Franceen Breault, Ange Neige, Montreal, Quebec

My heart is aching. We have lost a great one on this earthly plane. Because of my love of animals, Ted's article was always one of the first I read in New Age Retailer. His articles always spoke from the heart. He made me cry, laugh, and empathize with each and every animal he wrote about. I will miss Ted's contributions greatly. He taught me so much and will continue to do so. I am always pulling one of his books to find out the meaning of recurring symbology throughout my day or week. I will miss his wonderful smile at future expos, just as I had missed him, and wondered where he was, at the Ohio Universal Light Expo two weeks ago (Oct. 10th and 11th). My condolences to his family. Surely the Animal Kingdom in Heaven is rejoicing and dancing. With heartfelt regards, Sara Gerhardt, Cincinnati, Ohio

Our community has lost a giant. -- Gloria Ross, The Heart of the Earth, Loveland, Colo.

I only met Ted once, at INATS in Denver 2008, but I found him to be such a gentle man. It was such a pleasure to meet him. His pewter pieces, Animal-Speak, are so unique. I always hoped that there would be a 3-D set of the pieces with more animals. May God and the Goddess guide his steps as he walks toward the Elysian Fields. -- Mary Battle, Hawk in the Wind

I did not know Ted personally, but I want to extend to you my sincere expression of sympathy for your loss. My thoughts will be with you in the coming weeks and months. -- Heather Lyon, Lyon Books and Learning Center, Chico, Calif.

I have been selling books for 30 years, and my favorite author has been Ted Andrews. I was able to meet him the first time at a show in Wichita, Kansas, many years ago and later at INATS a number of times. I always praised him for his young peoples’ series as it was needed most of all and is still so. He understood the need for this series. I found that he was a hard worker with no ego and devoted to this field. He was a good author and a good human, as well. He talked his talk and then walked his walk. His contributions as a person, author, and compassionate person will truly be missed. He seemed to give time to everyone and knew where his roots were in dealing with his customer base so he gave his time accordingly. Everyone could learn from his devotion to humanity as reflected in his writings as well as in his other contributions to this field. He will be greatly missed by myself and all the other people that I have introduced his books to over these years—he helped open many doors and opportunities all over the planet. May he have peace and freedom from suffering and can continue his work from the other side. – Frank Slagle, Mystic Forest, Mountain Home, Ark.

I'm so sorry to hear of Ted's loss to this world. I'm sure he's soaring with his bird spirits around our sacred earth. -- Heidi Shedlow, Phoenix Institute

The truly unique insights he had into nature made his column my favorite section in your publication. I hope his spirit is at peace among all the creature souls he respected and revered. Hugs to all who knew and loved him. --C. Ambrosio, Ambrosio Art

Words cannot express our deepest shock and sorrow at Ted's death ... a loss that affects not only us personally, but the community and the Earth. Ted was instrumental in assisting us with our Mythical Goddess Tarot Deck. He inspired us, endorsed the deck, and saved us time, effort and money with information he shared with us on so many levels. Ted's generosity and genuine essence were so uplifting to us. He walked his talk and truly lit the way for all of us. Ted will be deeply missed. We are thankful for his rich legacy of heartfelt information in the many books he has given us. Ted has changed the way people think on Earth with his gifts of knowledge, wisdom and insight. We are so, so fortunate to have had the privilege of knowing him for the time we did. -- Sage Holloway and Katherine Skaggs

I got to meet Ted about three years ago at one of his lectures out here in Massachusetts. It was a great pleasure to meet him since I had become an animal communicator. I found out in the workshop he is from Ohio, as I was born there, and the girl sitting next to me at the lecture was also from Ohio. Pretty wild. I use Ted's book, Animal-Speak, as a teaching guide to others and as a resource for myself on what the animals are teaching us and how they guide us. I was amazed at how many of my friends started to call me and ask me to read out of his book about the animals that crossed their paths and what Ted had to say. I know he cared deeply about teaching the younger children to also understand animals so that we can all live in peace and harmony together. We have lost a great friend and teacher to the animal world. He had given us a way to better understand our connection with the animals. I will miss him dearly. -- Janet Kennedy, Animal Communicator, Boston, Mass.

I had the pleasure to meet Ted at INATS in Denver 2007. Having always enjoyed his work, I was very happy to get to shake his hand and talk with him. The first thing you noticed about Ted was his friendly smile and attitude—it danced in his eyes. A good and genuine person, we are all blessed by his contributions, and he will be greatly missed. -- Mickie Mueller, www.mickiemuellerart.com

Ted Andrews' Animal-Speak has been a huge source of inspiration for me, so much so that in the ‘90s I traveled to several of the workshops that Ted gave in Ohio. As a Sacred Animal Artist, I had studied and meditated with animals and animal spirits most of my life. But I admired Ted for making his passion his work and sharing it so beautifully with the world. In October of 2007 I met him again at the Universal Light Expo in Columbus, Ohio and we decided to collaborate on a Calendar for 2009. The calendar came out in October of last year with his writing and my art. He was so supportive of my work and allowed me amazing freedom in interpreting his words. We talked on the phone several times during that period, and he shared how he wanted so much to help others find their connection to animals and to help those who were doing this work. I realize now what a gift this experience was and that we are given opportunities in our life that may never come again. His death reminds me of how short our time is. But I also feel him asking me to say "yes" to my own responsibility to paint our relationships to the Earth and the animals that we share life with. He will be deeply missed. -- Ann Beeching

I met Ted Andrews at a book signing in Kansas City in the late 1990s. My ex-husband and I had acquired a property where suspicious and unexplained happenings were occurring on a regular basis. After speaking with Ted about it, I left with possible explanations and options, ultimately leading me to the study and embrace of shamanism as a way to heal people, communities, institutions, and the Earth and to live in balance. My relationship with animals has been forever affected by his insights. His gift to me forever changed my life. -- Jari Holland Buck, Majestic Wolf

In many ways Ted Andrews is the New Age Crocodile Hunter. To me, he is an ambassador for not only the spiritual aspects of our interactions with the wild in our world, but also the ecological. Ted’s deep dedication to promoting respect for the world is infectious and he educated us all without lecturing. One could say that Ted has a special way with plants and animals, but really, Ted has a special way with people. I’m using the present tense because I don’t want to infer that just because he’s physically no longer with us, that his work has ended. I know his work and his words will continue in many ways. So to me, Ted still is an ambassador and teacher … -- Jessica Sigman, Art Director, Continuity Publishing

What a huge loss for our community. -- Suzanne Mancinelli, Dryad Design

During a visit to INATS in Denver 2008, Ted was doing readings with his Animal-Speak Tokens. I decided to get in line to just shake his hand and see what he said. I don't know if I will be able to put this into language to relay the impact it had. All I can say is he looked at me and said, "I know this has been a hard time and, come September, things are going to get a little easier." If you had asked anyone who shared life with me at the time, they would have said, "Hard time, what is he talking about?" For four years there had been challenges. Anyway just hearing him say that ... acknowledging my journey ... and the hope and trust he gave made a huge impact in my life. I thought of his words often. Things did change in September for the better. It has made me aware how our words, even to strangers, can give greatly needed strength and power. His compassion was a gift that day. In gratitude… -- Alicha N. Dwyer, Unity, Unity Village, Mo.

Although we never personally met Ted Andrews, we feel as if we know him very well. We often refer to his expertise in many ways as a means to assist ourselves and our customers in better understanding the magic of the universe. Thank you, Ted, for all that you have shared with your Earth Family on so many levels. You are missed on Mother Earth and your work and love for all will continue on. I keep Animal-Speak close by and fondly remember your sound healing and all of your sharings at expos and INATS through the years, as well as New Age Retailer articles and your many books and cards, runes, and more. Blessings to Kathy and your entire family. Ted, you have inspired everyone at playful and, of course, profound levels.
Sweet tones, Joan Vann, Tucson & Cincinnati -- Joan Vann, Tucson, Arizona

I have known Ted for many years. Long before he wrote any books, he taught classes at our house in Dayton, Ohio, and at our store, Moonspire Books & Gifts. He was a very nice man and always helped us at the store whenever he could. I certainly will miss him, even though it's been some time since we have communicated. The metaphysical community is a little less terrific without him. -- Joel Ashenbaum

I am so sorry to hear of Ted's passing. Remember he is a spirit of goodness that will always surround you and your work. -- Jan Graves

Our sincerest sympathy to everyone at New Age Retailer and to Ted's family for your loss. -- Mary and Richard Maddux, Heart of Healing, Sonoma, Calif.

I was very saddened to hear of Ted Andrews' passing. Although I never met him, his studies on Native American spirituality and specifically his book Animal-Speak inspired me to release two musical CDs Animal Totems (Singing Wolf Records 2002) and Animal Totems 2 (Singing Wolf Records 2005), contemporary Native American music for violin and Native American flute. I've used his book as reference while I have continued to develop my own sense of animals and their totem powers. My wife and I had worked with animal rescue organizations for years but the animal totems information brought us more clarity as to why we loved doing it. Ted, you will be greatly missed. -- Arvel Bird, Singing Wolf Records

Oh how sad. I just last week contacted him about possibly speaking here in Allegan. Sending Ted and his family and friends much love. -- Kass Hillard

We have suffered a great loss with Ted's passing. I really liked and respected him. He stayed natural and true to his personal ideas of what we all needed to know. For instance, my totem is the mountain lion. I have had an ongoing relationship with my friend mountain lion for many years. However, when the real thing came to visit me repeatedly, I was able to distinguish the difference between real and spiritual because of Ted's books on the finer points of animal behavior. Good thing to learn because the real ones have very big teeth! Blessings for our dear friend … -- Reverend Kate Spilman

Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet Ted in person, but he did touch my spirit with his wonderful articles in New Age Retailer. His articles were the first thing I read in each issue and always warmed my heart. His teachings were joyful, uplifting, and helped me discover a new dimension in the animal world. My favorite was the one that appeared in the New Year 2009 issue (http://www.bluetoad.com/publication/?i=9721&page=1&p=71). Blessings to Ted's soul as it journeys to Summerland. What a blessing he has been to all of us! I met Ted in the early 1990s as he made a few trips to San Diego. I had the good fortune to listen to him speak and share. He was a delightfully humble man who was happy to know people were interested in what he had to share. He was magnificent in providing so many pieces of information from the nature world, through the Qabalah, and oh so much more! He will be missed! -- Rev. Katherine Torres, Ph.D., D.D.

My heart is saddened by the earthly loss of this revolutionary animal communicator/healer/author. I attended a seminar of his years back and to this day, I've still never heard anyone captivate an audience with stories and knowledge like Ted. His Animal-Speak book is like a bible to me. Even though he will be missed by many, I know there is a Divine reason for his passing, and he is assisting us and the Animal Kingdom with the planetary shifts that are upon us. Thank you, Ted, the Animal Spirit Whisperer. -- Tania Iagallo, Merlin's Oracle

Ted Andrews appeared numerous times at the Open Mind Bookstore over the last 15 years. I was always impressed with how professional he was as a person and how interesting he was as a workshop facilitator. Extremely organized and passionate, his workshops were always a treat and were always packed. And he was not a greedy person in the least; he was extremely reasonable. He talked the talk and walked the walk. This is really very sad for all us left behind, but we may not have seen the last of Ted Andrews. After all, who knows what he'll be capable of on the other side! -- Philip Harris, The Open Mind Bookstore, Sewickley, Pa.

To say that we are saddened to hear of the death of Ted Andrews would be an understatement. At our shop, we often turn to Ted's book Animal-Speak whenever any of us has an unusual experience with an animal. I have also been using Andrews' book Imagick as the basis for a path-working workshop since about 1990. Since Ted began writing in New Age Retailer, most of us here have found ourselves turning to his column first whenever a new edition arrives. We have always been moved by his humor, sincerity, and honesty. As for myself, I feel that I've come to know Andrews through his writing in your magazine in a way not possible through his wonderful books. His columns showed him to be a likable man, and I'm sure that all who knew him are proud to have had the chance to call him a friend. All of us here at The Unicorn Shoppe send our sympathy to those who knew and loved him. -- Christine Hall

With Ted’s long list of accomplishments, what I appreciated most was his shy (which he claimed he truly was by nature) and humble approaches. Before, during, and after discussing work matters, we always made it back to when and what we were planting in our gardens. One of the funniest moments at INATS West is when I wrestled Ted to the COVR Awards podium when we tied for first place. For the rest of the INATS show he razzed me about beating him up. It was too soon for us in the physical, but I’m certain he had a huge welcoming committee when he crossed. – Michelle A. Payton, Ph.D., The Left Side

One of my dearest goals was to hear Ted Andrews in person. His books and teachings were and continue to be of the greatest assistance to me on my spiritual path. Hopi Prayer
(author unknown)
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint in the snow.
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain.
I am the autumn's gentle rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there,
I did not die.
--Todd and Joey
